In my parent's front yard there used to be a cherry blossom tree. When I was little I used to sit in the branches and look up at the sky through the blossoming branches and think that it was too beautiful to comprehend, and that was what heaven must look like. This tree was a huge part of the mythology I created for myself as a child. When the tree started dying, losing branches and furling inward like a leaf, it made me think about childhood innocence, the loss of it, and what happens when we ascribe transcendent concepts to mortal icons. |
